Content is King: 4 tips to write better SEO content with Yoast

When pondering on what to write about this week, I got a bit stuck. Truth is I was lacking in content. I have so much I want to pass on to you but I have to break it down into small bite sized chunks, if that make sense. The most difficult thing with writing these articles is that I am writing to humans. An audience that gets bored easily, and want content served up on a platter. Truth is I don’t even know if you ever read these articles but one thing I know for sure is that the BOTS read them.

To me, as a digital marketer, sorry to say, the bots are more important. I do try to write the content for you guys, maybe throw in a couple of Subaru disses here and there but the bots don’t care about that stuff. You too should have the bots in mind when writing your content. Here are 4 tips to help you write better SEO content.

Use H1 and H2 tags like a pro

Well it doesn’t seem very important to your end users but remember we are doing this for the bots. Your H1 text i.e. Heading 1 should be what your article is about. There should be only one H1 tag on your page as this illustrates to the bot what your content is about. You should use H2 tags to illustrate subheadings. You should also front load your H1 with the keyword text e.g. Acne Remedy: 4 ways to treat your acne. Or Web design: 10 stunning design trends of 2020. This is optional and not all H1’s should follow this form but it does help with ranking.

Sprinkle a pinch of Keywords to taste.

Keywords illustrate to Google what your article is about. Since the deprecation of the <meta type=”Keywords”> tag, Google searches for keywords in your text. It crawls your content looking for keywords and ranks your page using these keywords. By rule of thumb keywords should not be more than 5% of your article. Do not overload your article with endless keywords. Google will surely penalize you. Make sure that your keyword is prominent in the first 10 sentences of your article. Use modifiers in your keywords and titles to rank for long tail keywords. Modifiers such as best, guide, checklist, tips can help you rank for long tail keywords e.g. best website designer, trimming your edges checklist

Title and description tags

This have to be the most important part of your content optimization. Your title should be descriptive and contain your keyword. You can set up your title and meta description using Yoast.

Outbound links

Google loves a cheerful giver. Your content should have outbound links to similar articles. This signals to the bots that the content on both article might be related. Be generous and give at least 4-5 links on your article. If you are a bit stingy you can use a rel=”no-follow” tag on your links but honestly, why bother.

Yoast is the best tool to optimize your on-page SEO. You can use their checklist to ensure that your article meets all the guidelines discussed. It is free but also has a premium version. The free version works just fine, I know that is some god news, but if it impresses you please consider getting the full version.

Just remember as you write for BOTS you also have to write for human readers. Make sure your content is unique, valuable and optimized for search intent but more importantly, the bots can understand your structure, don’t forget the BOTS.Never forget the BOTS.
